Knowledge is the Key to a Better Diet

Maintaining a healthy weight is science, NOT rocket science when you understand the key concepts of good diet management. While we haven’t listed all the keys, here are a few good basics that surprisingly few people know or understand.

Rules Different When Dieting vs. Maintaining

Losing weight vs. maintaining a healthy weight is entirely different and requires different rules. Eating too many calories or the wrong type of food cause weight gain and–more importantly–can make it challenging to maintain a healthy weight. Good Intentions are not enough. Taking steps to educate yourself about why and how you gain weight can empower you to make smarter food and lifestyle choices. The more you understand about the elements of a proper diet, the better able you will be to lose weight and keep it off for life. Knowledge is power when it comes to weight loss and weight maintenance.

Different Foods Metabolize Differently

Different kinds of food metabolize in your body differently. For example, calories consumed from sugar affect your body far differently than calories from healthy proteins like grilled chicken. When you eat high-fat, high-carb sugary foods, your body reacts by stimulating cravings for more and leads to overconsumption of calories and weight gain. These foods often leave you feeling hungrier and, sadly, heavier. Foods that cause these cravings are well-known to all of us, including such poor dietary options as candy, soda, chips, crackers, pastries, and ice cream. Furthermore, other not so obvious sources that can also have the same negative effects on you include like fruit juices and barbeque sauce, for example.

Proper Protein is Good for Your Body

Eating high-quality protein, on the other hand, does a far better job of satisfying you nutritionally. Protein-rich foods work to preserve body muscle–which burns calories 24 hours a day, even while sleeping. Protein is also believed to help boost your metabolism as the human body use more energy to digest it. Protein is in numerous food sources besides meat and fish alone, some other excellent sources of protein include beans, nuts, and eggs.

Not All Foods are Equal

Bottom line, the most crucial point to understand is that consuming a can of sugary soda, with 140 calories, will have a completely different impact on your body than eating the same number of calories from two medium eggs.

3 Easy Changes Can Do Your Body Good

Here are three easy healthy habits you can start immediately to achieve a healthier lifestyle.

1. Ditch Sugar and Starch Eliminating or reducing most simple sugars and processed, starchy carbs from your diet will help you lose weight and improve your overall health.

2. Drink More Water Staying well hydrated will promote better digestion. Your body is made up of mostly water and needs it to function optimally. Soda and alcohol do not provide you with proper hydration. Further, they undermine your health, so do yourself a favor and eliminate them from your diet once and for all.

3. Get Moving Regularly Adopting a daily routine of moderate exercise will help you lose weight and improve your overall state of health. Walking is an excellent form of exercise and is easy to do.
